Demand Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions neutrality at Stanford University

Stanford has taken great initiatives to mitigate the campus’ carbon footprint, but its current climate goals do not address scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions.

Stanford's scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions consist of indirect emissions that arise from sources not owned by Stanford but are a result of Stanford activities. This includes emissions from business air travel, employee commuting, and purchased goods and services. Stanford currently only tracks business air travel and employee commuting, and these two sources alone accounted for 37% of Stanford's total carbon emissions in 2017.

We, Students for a Sustainable Stanford, call on Stanford University to pledge to reach net-zero scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 2035.
