Rare Orchid and Roodekrans-Paardekraal Ridge Ecosystem under Threat

  • by: Tamara Becker
  • recipient: Mogale City and Lebogang Maile, Gauteng's MEC for Economic & Rural Development

This rare orchid known as Brachycorythis conica subsp. Transvaalensis which is an endemic wild orchid species last recorded in Gauteng, South Africa in the 1950's has been rediscovered on the Roodekraans-Paardekraal ridge. This tiny, fragile population that numbers no more than 100 is the only viable population of this critically endangered plant species left on earth.

Mogale City has received the provincial go ahead to use this land for putting 3000 housing units or putting 9000 people in high-rise flats to be called Proteadal situated on this irreplaceable and ecological area essential for the conservation of biodiversity in Gauteng, where critically endangered Red Data-listed species like the orchid have been discovered. The ridge ecosystem is also a vital corridor for the movement of urban wildlife, including jackal, serval and antelope not to mention the hunting grounds for a pair of resident, breeding black eagles, living on the cliffs of the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden.

This area was classified as a critical biodiversity area and ecological support area under the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development's conservation plans and should continue to be protected from development.

Please sign my petition to put Proteadal on hold indefinitely and to create a wildlife reserve along this little piece of unspoilt, urban paradise in order to protect this rare wild orchid and the many animals which exist and to safeguard the ridge ecosystem for future generations.

Thank you for your support. I have joined forces with the Proteadal Conservation Association (PCA) and we are in the process of trying to acquire pro-bono lawyers to take this matter to court to have the decision by the MEC reviewed/overturned. Please keep sharing.
