Demand those responsible for the illegal snaring and shooting of badgers in the Peak District area of England are prosecuted.

Footage filmed by an animal rights group show badgers being caught in snares and shot on the Moscar grouse shooting estate in the Peak District area of England, owned by the Duke and Duchness of Rutland. Under the Protection of Badgers Act 1992, it is a criminal offence to injure, kill, or ill-treat badgers in England and Wales. I ask you to stand up for these peaceful creatures, and demand that the police properly investigate this horrific cruelty and that the perpetrators are caught and charged. Anyone convicted under the 1992 Act can be sentenced to a six month custodial sentence and/or fined £5000. The distressing film can be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbGdfhL-5XM.

The animal rights group estimated that 400 wire snare were set across the estate (Britain is one of the few European countries where snares are still used) alongside a variety of other traps to catch mammals and birds. Over a four week period they filmed two badgers caught in snares. They believe that the first was shot by a masked member of the estate, and buried in a nearby wood. The second was caught overnight, and endured a prolonged capture and botched release, with the animal suffering multiple injuries before running off with the snare still attached. A variety of other animals were also snared and killed, including Foxes and Mountain Hares.

The killing of these animals is solely so that the Duke of Rutland has plenty of grouse available for bloodthirsty gunmen to shoot. Demand that this appalling destruction of our wildlife is stopped on his estate, and that the people responsible for harming these badgers are charged under the 1992 Act.

I have recently updated the petition to add a link to the footage of the mistreatment of the badgers and other animals on the estate, which some people could find distressing.
