URGENT: EU pesticide ban – must be upheld! Ban the use of Neonicotinoids in Canada.

Pollinators, including honeybees, are a central element of our food system and a critical pillar of our ecology. While the impact of honeybees extends far beyond the pollination of commercial agricultural crops, the monetary value of just this service is estimated to be in the hundreds of billions of dollars globally each year.

Their future and our very own future are on the line – disastrous numbers of domestic and wild bee colonies are being decimated as a result of the impact of parasites and especially industrialised agriculture – in particular pesticides. Neonicotinoids are one particular group of chemical agents that has long been linked to bee death. These are particularly nasty nerve agents that are used in industrial agriculture to treat seeds of crops such as corn (maize), canola and wheat before they are sown. The effects of neonicotinoids are potentially deadly – and not only for bees.

In the past decade, extreme declines in bee populations have been measured prompting widespread concern from citizens, scientists, and many other governments.

Neonicotinoids or "neonics", the world's most widely used insecticide, because they were found to be of 'high acute risk' to bees.

Serious scientific evidence shows that the nerve agents cause serious harm to bees - whose pollination is vital for many crops, and thus threaten our whole food supply.

While many theories have been put forward for this collapse of the bee population, one of the most likely is a class of pesticides called neonicotinoids, which attack insects’ central nervous systems causing paralysis and death, and have proven very harmful in sub-lethal quantities.

The Canadian Government should follow Europe’s lead and ban the use of neonicotinoids in Canada. We call upon you, the Government of Canada to, for the sake of our bees and our food security, follow Europe’s lead, and adhere to the precautionary principle by banning the use of neonicotinoids in Canada.

Let's swarm the Government with signatures now and make sure they protect bees once and for all.
