SAVE OUR FIRE PITS ON SAN DIEGO BEACHES & BAYS!

SAVE OUR FIRE PITS ON SAN DIEGO BEACHES & BAYS!

Target:
Mayor Jerry Sanders & The San Diego City Counsel
Sponsored by:

We wish to appeal to the relevant authorities to reconsider their decision to remove any of our remaining fire rings (or squares) from our beaches and parks. The fire rings are an integral part of beach life and tradition that offer locals and visitors a chance to enjoy one of the quintessential charms of California living. Seeing the fire rings at night, with happy people gathered around sharing stories and friendship is an inspiring experience; one that no price can be put on. The fire rings are therefore of great value to the community for the enjoyment of our most treasured resource, our beaches.

Removing the remaining fire rings sends the wrong signal to the public regarding the government%u2019s commitment to maintain a vibrant beach and park system which can also be enjoyed after the sun sets as well. Promoting our region for tourists also requires that we continue to preserve what for many visitors is a unique experience.

We appeal to the authorities to please reconsider.

Fire pits on San Diego public beaches are one of the most iconic tributes to Southern California life style. My children must have the same opportunity to enjoy the beaches at night as I did growing up a native to San Diego.

The economy is horrible, by keeping fire pits. People can continue to hold their jobs. We need to keep the fire pits. Fire Pits prevent crimes.

The bonfires in Ocean Beach are one of the major characteristics of the San Diego beaches that has kept me and other visitors from out-of-state coming back for years. This can only hurt the local economy!

I was born and raised in San Diego and they've been here for as long as I can remember. Myself, my family and friends have always enjoyed them and they are a San Diego tradition. Why must people/groups continually take away things that so many people enjoy! You need to think long and hard about the impact you'll be making!

Please do not remove the fire rings, I've been making bon fires on the beach for over 30 years with my family and would love to continue the tradition with my kids and their kids.

Beaches without bonfires in San Diego, I thought was a mission impossible, and I can't believe that it is being taken away, for a drop in the bucket of how much San Diego is really behind in its budget. It has a long tradition in San Diego and thousands of people would be disapointed and angry from being denied the ability to continue to share and make new memories around bonefires.

Our unique beach bonfire setting is recognized nationwide. It was the one thing I had to see for myself during my first visit from Pennsylvania. I had set out to bonfire at the beach and when I was trying to decide whether or not to move to San Diego...the smell of bonfire in the air and seeing families enjoying the fire pits sealed the deal for me. I paid the extreme price to move here, bought at the top of the market in 2005 and lost a bunch of money doing so...but it all seems worth it when we are sitting on the beach enjoying a sunset barbecue and bonfire. I am definitely starting to reconsider my move to San Diego. Since 2005 so much has changed here and it just doesn't have the same feeling it did when I decided to move here. The threat of losing fire pits seems like a silly reason to decide to move but it is more the combination of events over the past couple of years with the fire pits topping it all off. If San Diego wants to keep residents they may reconsider removing all of those little things that make San Diego what it is. These little things do play a role in deciding whether or not to buy here and if paying outrageous mortgages is actually worth it.

There are other ways to save and removal of the fire pits is not one of them. Bring back the fire pit for San Diegans to enjoy.

I hope that someone will file a court order to halt the removal of the fire pits before more damage is done so that we can discuss this matter. I believe that the quick action to remove these pits was done in a transparent and deliberate manner to avoid this conversation. Removal of beach fire pits is a big issue that effects all San Diego citizens and needs to be discussed.

Don't remove the bonfire pits. It was a horrible decision to remove them and is sending the wrong message about enjoying our beaches.

What ever happened to the pursuit of happiness? There are many groups willing to take up the task of cleaning these fireplits. I am in the county but pay taxes to the city. I don't get to vote as a county homeoner in many issues. Please don't take the recreation out of San Diego. I hardly have reason to go downtown any longer as a result of the redevelopment.

Tourism, and thus revenue, is generated by the beach culture that San Diego is known for. These fire pits help significantly contribute to this beach culture. Cleaning the fire pits would also be a good, free job for the people who need to complete community service.

I have grown up in SD and going to bonfires is part of the SD experience. By getting rid of the fire pits, you would be getting rid of many San Diegan's histories. Please do not remove them, pretty, pretty please!

This is another great example of the city taking away form us, the tax payers! Seriously? what are the maintenance fees per year? If funding is truly the issue, I support the idea of 'sponsoring' the fire pits, via corporate sponsorshp, community service, and/or volunteers. However we/they do it - please don't take them away!
# 39:
5:51 pm PST, Dec 12, Linda Martin, California
Removal of these fire pits removes not only a great past time in San Diego but a part of the San Diego life style and certainly another great attraction for the tourists that pour money into our economy every year!

Why don't we start an "adopt a fire pit" fund??? This is the only way the City will bring them back. It's too late for petitions.
# 37:
5:23 pm PST, Dec 12, Deborah Cole, California
This is not the answer. What are you doing to our city? Please use the power you're given to make wiser decisions. You don't need to maintenance the fire pits that frequently, just freeze maintenance for awhile, or perhaps you can have groups sponsor the pits, like they do for freeway clean up.
# 36:

Take into consideration other venues to preserve our fire pits (community service or volunteers). The fire pits are part of San Diego's rich beach culture and something that all residents and tourist enjoy.

I'm a transplant to SD for about 7 1/2 years now. The first New Years my husband and I spent here was down in OB around the firepits. If we all come together, I'm sure we can figure out a way to keep the firepits going. They are a part of our city and our beaches that we shouldn't have to be without. ~Cat

Why would we take out the fire pits?, All we need to do is take away the service of cleaning the pits, then what do you know it will be just like a public BBQ, where you have to clean it before using it. I hope they dont take away the BBQ's next

There has got to be a creative and economically sensible resolve r to this situation.I simply can't understand why the politicians choose to hit at the "small" benefits of taxpayers to resolve their gross mismanagement.

In times of economic crunch, statistics provide that crime rate goes up. When you take away activities that don't cost money, you must deal with the results. All generations and people enjoy San Diego's fire pits where all sorts of social gatherings occur, including a safe non-threatening environment for young San Diegans.

i don't think fire pits are a vital part of the budget. im no politician but there are probably more useless things to cut out of the budget. i have been going to bonfires at the beach since i was young, and i don't want to see them go.

The beach fire rings are an important part of San Diego. We wish that city counsel would focus on how to maintain such treasures rather than eliminating them.

My group of kayakers and I have been using the fire rings on Bahia Point after our paddles. Bonfires and BBQ's have helped us to attract more people to our events. The fire pits have been a very well used resource, helping to attract people to San Diego's beaches. These people spend money at local businesses. I'm sure we wouldn't have to look far to find better places for the city to make spending cuts.

Families are desperately trying to maintain some recreation in spite of terrible financial losses and you remove one of the most incredibly lovey and special elements of san diego living? Shame on you!! We cant afford movies or dinners out these days at all...may we not gaze at the water and the skyline by a warm fire while we dream of a financially healthy America that will someday return? Return the firepits to us....they attract tourists and are an invaluable asset to Californias coastline and tourism industry. We expect the wisdom of our concerns to be listened to..Thank you. Seems that the city is trying to kill the tourism industry. Interesting that that this is the chosen cut, not city hall waste and corruption. Let's fix the real probolems with city hall.

The presence of the glowing fire pits dotting the beaches of San Diego are akin to the shops and markets that denote a walking neighborhood. They make what would otherwise be a dark and desolate, unwelcoming landscape, into a lively, vibrant and almost magical place. I think that you all understand the benefits of a walking neighborhood, where local people walk the streets regularly, at all hours, visiting local shops and restaurants, building community. The crime is less and the economic development is improved. I argue that the fire pits along San Diego beaches serve to the same ends. San Diego obviously identifies itself as a beach community. The opportunity for an evening bonfire is integral to that experience and to the public image. In the five years that I have lived here, I have been surfing once, and actually gotten in the ocean only a hand full of times. However, I have been to at least 50 gatherings around various beach fire rings, for all sorts of occasions. Of all the recreational activities San Diego offers, enjoying a fire in the evening is one of the most accessible to the public. http://www.savethefirepits.com/ Brady Mahaney San Diego
