As New Orleans and the world mark the tenth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, it's critical our coastal cities learn the lessons of the storm. Sign this petition urging coastal mayors to #ActOnClimate and protect cities like New Orleans.

James Hanson, the world's most important climate scientist, and 16 of his colleagues, have just issued an alarming report which shows that current plans to limit climate change to 2 degrees centigrade are "highly dangerous" and will most likely drown the world's coastal communities with rapid sea level rise and stronger storm systems.

As a resident of New Orleans that lived through Hurricane Katrina, I know what our climate crisis looks like: loss of life and livelihoods, massive evacuations and relocations, huge recovery costs and enormous, expensive flood control projects.

The Congress of the United States and other national governments have proved unable to take the steps necessary to protect our coasts and communities. This petition calls on the mayors of the 10 most at risk cities to lead the way and demand action in the upcoming U.N. climate talks in Paris. If the world won't agree to more aggressive action and move quickly away from dirty and dangerous coal, oil and natural gas, these 10 cities (and thousands of other, smaller communities) are doomed.

Sign this petition and urge the world's mayors to lead where others haven't and save our climate and our coastal communities.

A new report from James Hanson and 16 other climate scientists has concluded that plans to limit global warming to 2 degrees centigrade will inundate your city with rapid sea level rise and stronger storms.

Please act now and demand that negotiators in Paris move our energy economy immediately away from dirty and dangerous coal, oil, natural gas, and the other sources of green house gasses.

Without this action the loss of life and livelihoods, massive evacuations and relocations, huge recovery costs and enormous, expensive flood control projects will doom our coastal communities. The stakes could not be higher, and the need for your leadership is clear.
