Equality for Puerto Rico, Tell Congress to Reform the Jones Act!

In 1917, the Merchant Marine Act, also known as the Jones Act, was passed to help secure and protect the US shipping economy. However, as a result of this act, the economy has been restricted. Puerto Rico has felt these restrictions more than most, since imports coming to the island from the US can only come on American ships. These restrictions have caused a financial crisis in which Puerto Rico does not have the ability to maintain its infrastructure. Now, in the wake of Hurricane Maria, the disrepair has led to widespread destruction, more than would have resulted with an up-to-date system. By reforming the Jones Act, we could better support our economy, and the economies of our territories that have no vote in Congress.
Update #16 years ago
We have won a small victory! The Trump administration announced a temporary waiver of the Jones Act for Puerto Rico. Our ultimate goal is for reform so that Puerto Rico can grow independent of us if we deny statehood. Thank you to all who have signed so far. Together, we will win!
