Colorado: Legalize Rain Barrels!

Believe it or not, using rain barrels to catch rainwater for use in gardening is a criminal offense in the state of Colorado. But a new bill could change that.

Using rain barrels fights drought, cuts water bills and encourages gardeners to be more self-sufficient and conscious of the environment. Despite these important benefits, agriculture and water lobbyists believe that rain barrels "steal" water from lakes and streams where it would eventually migrate. There is also concern over mosquito breeding, but properly designed rain barrels have screens that keep mosquitoes out.

Water and agriculture lobbies should not have control over a person's conscious choice to conserve water. Collecting rainwater in barrels is obviously more economical and ecologically friendly than using hoses and sprinklers, and helps people be more conscious of the environment, which will make a positive influence on their attitude towards conservation in all facets of their lives. Please sign the petition to urge Colorado legislators to vote YES on the bill to make rain barrels legal!

I am shocked that collecting water in rain barrels is still considered a criminal offense in the state of Colorado. I am writing to support a new bill that would legalize rain barrels.
