In 2005, the polar bear was classified as "vunerable" on the IUCN World Conservation Union's Red List. In 2008, the United States Department of the Interior listed the polar bear as "threatened", and in Russia and Canada, the polar bear is a species of "concern".
The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora is meeting in March of 2013 in Thailand, and there is the opportunity move the status the polar bear to be listed as an Endangered Species.
Experts have predicted that 2/3 of the worlds polar bear could disappear in the next 40 years due to climate change, disappearing sea ice, pollution, poaching, hunting and industrial impact. Some scientists are even contemplating euthanasia for polar bear as they run out of a food source and face starving to death.
Polar bears are out of time. The collective world leaders have done nothing to combat man-made climate change and the polar bears are at serious risk of extinction. List them as an Endangered Species and ban the trade in polar bear products. This may be the last convention to protect them.
