Urge Louisiana to Move Forward With Stringent Animal Cruelty Charges & Penalties to Stop the Abuse

  • by: Sue Lee

Louisiana faces regular concerns and issues of animal cruelty and the Governor has made attempts to stop the abuse by introducing two new laws.  These proposed laws are to provide increased penalties for egregious animal abuse such as torture and starvation. Unless charges and penalties are more severely enforced and enforced, these acts will not ever stop against poor defenseless animals.  You can read more on the Louisiana animal cruelty issues and their laws at http://www.straypetadvocacy.org/PDF/AnimalCrueltyLaws.pdf & http://www.humanesociety.org/news/press_releases/2009/08/hsus_welcomes_stronger_louisiana_animal_cruelty_laws_081009.html?referrer=https://search.yahoo.com/

The Humane Society in the state was pleased to learn of these new laws, stating that "Increasing the penalties for animal cruelty will hopefully make people think twice before abusing an animal in Louisiana. We also applaud a provision of the law that requires psychological counseling for repeat offenders because there is a documented connection between animal cruelty and human violence." It is highly commendable that Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal signed these two bills, H.B. 90 and S.B. 31, so that animals could possibly receive the protection they deserve. Up until now, Louisiana was lagging behind other states in that regard.

My effort in this petition is to ensure that, along with these two new laws, any and all crimes against animals throughout the state of Louisiana culminate with severe felony charges and more stringent penalties of extensive jail time, high fines and possible community service.  Along with the felony offense and appropriate consequences, the offender would be listed as a registered animal abuser that would prevent future mistreatment, ownership and encounters with any animals for a lifetime, guaranteed.  Strict measurements need to be taken and fully enforced in order to put an end to such animal cruelty. Anyone who abuses an animal needs to be held accountable for any actions against these living creatures.  You can help to strengthen laws with strict felony charges and penalties for all crimes against animals by signing and sharing this petition, adding your own thoughts and comments in support of this issue.
