Preserve Childcare Assistance for Single Parents

  • by: Hannah G
  • recipient: Dannel Malloy, Governor of Connecticut

Parents in Connecticut are recently at risk for losing childcare assistance because Care for Kids does not have the budget necessary to keep the program. Already the program is not accepting new applicants, and making plans to cut existing recipients. There is a possibility these cuts could be made randomly, without considering the individual circumstances of each family.

Single parents are especially at risk, because if they loose childcare assistance and are forced to quit their jobs and stay at home with their children, there is no other adult in the household able to work. Many single parents have nobody to fall back on, and are unable to afford childcare on their own.

The average annual cost for childcare in Connecticut is approximately $20,000 (about $11k for a childcare center and about $30k for a nanny). Many single parents bring home only $20-$40k yearly salary, and have no way to afford childcare in addition to the cost of living.
