If given the choice, no one would want to lose hair due to medical reasons. Hair loss can be a crisis that's hard for many to take. The right wig can make all the difference in the world – boosting self-esteem, even helping the healing process for chemotherapy patients.
Living with Alopecia can be very stressful as well. Feelings towards baldness have been devastatingly negative as most view hair loss as a sign of weakness. Most Alopecia patients are not frail. Alopecia is an autoimmune disease that causes a person to lose their hair as the immune system destroys the hair follicles.
Yet the medical industry doesn’t accept hair loss as a vital medical problem and disregards the real distresses endured by so many.
Most medical insurance providers do not cover custom cranial “scalp” prosthesis. They may reimburse a small portion of a stock prosthesis. It is our mission to hopefully improve how medical insurance providers cover custom cranial “scalp” prosthesis.
We admire Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maryland and Minnesota medical insurance mandate laws to assist with the cost of cranial “scalp” prosthesis. It is a start. But even with mandates the providers will only cover a portion of a stock unit and the patients still carry the burden of paying for a custom cranial “scalp” prosthesis.
With this new legislation it would allow medical insurance companies to cover realistic looking custom cranial prosthesis for patients suffering from medical related hair loss.
