Enforcement of Continued Child Support for Children Still Attending School after the Age of 18

  • by: Ari Sousa
  • recipient: Governor of Florida

This bill will extend child support for those students who are still attending either high school past the age of 18 and/or those who continue on to college or university institutions after the completion high school. The burden of college costs falls to the custodial parent, usually the mothers, when the non-custodial parent, the fathers, are no longer required to pay for child support to the child once the child reaches the age of 18, according to state law. This proposal would enforce the non-custodial parent's obligation to continue in the financial support of the child while the child finishes high school, regardless of age at time of graduation, and furthermore, would continue to share financial burden with custodial parent until child completes college and/or university.
