Seal Kiwi Road, Wairoa Hawkes Bay

SEAL KIWI ROAD
There is a need to seal Kiwi Road to prevent dust nuisance. The dust created by vehicles using the road drifts over the urupa, and the maunga precious to the Tangata Whenua, over the vegetation in the surrounding paddocks which makes it unsuitable to plant vegetable gardens, not good for the stock to eat the contaminated grass. The dust at times drifts as far as homes on state highway 2. This road is heavily used when cattle sales are on at the sale yards by sheep/cattle trucks, farmers, stock agents etc. It is often used as an alternate route to the main highway, Most of all the dust drifts over our urupa (cemetary) and our sacred Maunga. Letters have been sent to the local Wairoa District council over the years and nothing has been done to date.  Added the following on 30 September 2016: -Seal with safety precautions in place e.g. judder bars (speed bumps) and a lower speed limit e.g. 50klm - 80klm speed zone.

Precautionary measures have been suggested by people from the Road both online and face to face, should the Road be sealed. Suggestions forthcomming are to have speed bumps (Judder Bars) put in place on either side of the corners we know to be dangerous if speeding, and before the railway crossing.  Also to make it a 50klm speed zone area, or maybe 70klms? They are thinking of the safety of our young ones, because the seal may tempt them reach up to 100 or more klm per hour.

Update #56 years ago
We did humbly ask the Councillors that during their deliberations on this issue, to take heed and listen to the voices of the people, and resolve to support the sealing of Kiwi Road. That we trusted that they would look at this matter in a favourable light. Once again we are most grateful to each and everyone of you.
