Alabama: Don't Ban Abortion Clinics Near Schools!
The Alabama House of Representatives recently voted to ban abortion clinics from operating within 2,000 feet from a public K-12 school. If the Senate passes the law, clinics within 2,000 feet of a school would not have their licenses renewed.
Alabama, a state with a population of nearly 5 million people, only has five abortion clinics in operation. The new law would force one of those clinics to move or shut down, making it even more difficult for women in the state to meet their health care needs. Abortion clinics offer other health care options such as counseling and contraceptive services, so shutting down a clinic would penalize women who aren't seeking an abortion at all. Not to mention, Alabama only has 17 hospitals that can deliver babies, so pregnant women already have few options no matter what they choose.
