Alberta: Stop the Use of Pepper Spray in Juvenile Detention Centres

Brandon (name changed for privacy) was in solitary confinement in a juvenile detention centre. He was bored and was banging against the doors when seven guards entered and pepper sprayed him. This would happen once again during his time in the detention centre.

Pepper spray causes pain and inflamation of the skin and respiratory system. It is not recommended for use in enclosed areas as it is hard to disperse. In a centre for youth it should never be used.

Kids like Brandon are being caused unnecessary harm through the use of pepper spray. It is too harsh a tool for indoors and there are other methods that guards could be using to help prisoners behave more appropriately.

Youth advocates across Alberta are calling for an end to this practice.

To Minister Ganley,

As someone who cares deeply for the safety of all youth I am deeply concerned with Alberta's policy of using pepper spray in youth facilities. There are already at least two accounts of this method being used inappropriately and more could arise.

The health effects of pepper spray on developing youth is not documented though the health effects of using pepper spray in enclosed areas are. It is not recommended to be used in enclosed areas because it can increase harmful health effects such as inflammation and respiratory problems.

I call on you to end this needless and harmful use of force on youth.
