New Hampshire is considering a bill that would extend the same protection for domestic violence victims to household pets. Such a bill or proposal would give a judge the power to grant custody of a pet to the person seeking protection from domestic violence and bar the alleged offender from having contact with the pet. As difficult and horrendous as domestic abuse is for the victim, often times an abuser will redirect their anger at the pets as a way to intimidate and further hurt the victim or keep them from leaving.
A spokesperson at the New Hampshire Coalition against Domestic and Sexual Violence states “One of the things we have consistently seen is that victims of domestic abuse are afraid to leave their homes because they are worried about what will happen to their pet. There is a link between people who kill or maim their pet and subsequently harm their partners.” Many oppose the proposed bill because they believe it is not specific enough and doesn’t really protect the pets; after all, they say, there are already laws against animal abuse. ”The flawed language in this bill would allow a party in a domestic violence dispute to use the power of the courts to forbid another party from visiting a beloved pet, further escalating hostilities between parties,” said Republican state Rep. Mark Warden.
As many as 26 other states in our country already have bills and protection orders for the pets involved in domestic abused. Please sign and share this petition worldwide in an effort to encourage New Hampshire to pass the domestic violence protection law for pets. Pets need to be safeguarded and defended while in the middle of family disputes, abuse, and domestic violence.
