Geology 1710 is a prerequisite for many of us in this course and so far it has been overwhelmingly difficult to pass. The lectures are extremely tricky to follow due to the communication barrier between student and professor because the instructor is from Africa whose spoken English is ''almost incomprehensible.''
Many students have expressed their frustrations when attempting to take notes during the lectures. We have tried to ask question during class and when they are answered, we are left with more confusion and even more questions. When preparing for exams, the reviews are given orally which again is hard due to the communication barrier. It is also impossible to refer to the lecture material for answers because there are anywhere from 75 to 175 slides per lecture and 2-3 lectures per exam. The only way to prepare for the exams is to Google the questions that are given orally. Even with preparing as much as possible, it is still a challenge to pass the exams because the wording on the exams is confusing as well.
This petition is being made for all students who have found complexity in trying to pass this class. This has happened multiple times to other students in the past and no one has tried to stand up and say anything. This is OUR turn to speak up. We all deserve a fair chance to pass. We all feel the frustration in this course as we try to do our best. Please if you agree regardless if you are passing or not, help our voices be heard, and sign this petition stating that GEOG 1710 is a class that is poorly structured and hard to comprehend due to the language barrier between professor and student.
