Save Burrowing Owls from Urban Development

On March 21, 2014, the Alameda Creek Alliance announced in a press release that it has filed a lawsuit against the city of Dublin, CA. The city approved a new development that threatens the largest remaining burrowing owl colony in the Livermore-Armador Valley.

The burrowing owl population has been in decline for decades, but the site of the proposed development has seen up to three dozen owls breeding there in recent years. In the press release, the Alameda Creek Alliance notes, "As burrowing owls
have been evicted or displaced by development, breeding colonies have disappeared from more than half of their former locations in the Bay Area in the past few decades. Despite their imperiled status, burrowing owls do not have adequate state or federal protection measures." They also write that California regularly permits the destruction of owl habitats after nesting season.

The company responsible for developing the land, SunCal, claims that it has a mitigation strategy to protect the burrowing owl population. The Alameda Creek Alliance contends that the city approved SunCal's projects with an inadequate environmental impact report and without a solid mitigation plan to protect the burrowing owl.

Sign this petition to demand that the city halt development until the effects on the burrowing owl population have been rigorously investigated.

To the City Council of Dublin, California:

We sign our names to this petition to express our outrage at the City of Dublin's approval of SunCal's development of the Camp Parks area. This development threatens a local species of concern, the burrowing owl. Despite the fact that the burrowing owl suffers from massive loss of habitat due to urban developments like the one proposed, the state has loose rules that contribute to the population's dwindling. The Camp Parks area contains one of the largest remaining burrowing owl breeding grounds.

Despite SunCal's assurances that it takes the burrowing owl into account, we demand a more rigorous environmental impact report be done on the area and that SunCal publicly release a detailed mitigation plan for lessening the impact on the burrowing owls. We ask that environmental groups be consulted during this process and approve any plan before development continues in the area.

Sincerely,
