Demand That Canada Stop Transporting Pigs During Extreme Weather

  • by: Susan Bird / Care2Causes

Members of the group "Toronto Pig Save" have held a weekly vigil outside the Quality Meat Packers slaughterhouse in Toronto, Canada since July 2011.  They have witnessed firsthand the astonishing cruelty facing thousands of pigs as they are transported by truck to their deaths.  In the summer, the pigs swelter in incredible heat.  Most recently, during the bone-chilling cold snap, the pigs have been subjected to hours of travel in -20F degree weather in trucks open to the air.  They have no food, water or warmth for up to 36 hours at a time.  They arrive at the slaughterhouse frostbitten, shivering, some of them actually frozen to the sides of the metal truck.   This is inhumane and unacceptable.

Please sign this petition asking Minister Gerry Ritz and Minister Rona Ambrose to take action to better enforce Canada's existing animal transport laws and to urge them to pass more protective laws.

Dear Minister Ritz and Minister Ambrose:

Those who have signed this petition, like many other members of the public, were distressed and saddened to learn that thousands of pigs are being transported to slaughterhouses in Canada under incredibly inhumane conditions.  Particularly now, with the intense cold weather, these pigs are suffering greatly.

During the current bone-chilling cold snap, pigs have been subjected to hours of travel in -20F degree weather in trucks open to the air.  They have no food, water or warmth for up to 36 hours at a time.  Many of them have been documented as arriving at the slaughterhouse frostbitten and shivering, some of them actually frozen to the sides of the metal trucks.   This is inhumane and unacceptable.

We urge the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to better enforce the animal transport laws already in place, and to pass more protective laws that will prohibit this sort of extreme animal suffering.

We thank you for giving this matter the attention it deserves.
