Each Year Big Canoe conducts "Deer Culling" and purchases deer corn to lure inocent deer to one area where these unsuspecting deer a picked off by "hunters" (not sure how that is hunting) Culling makes it sound nice but the reality is harsh and cruel. Culling is defined as the process of segregating organisms from a group according to desired or undesired characteristics. In animals, culling is the process of removing or segregating animals from stock based on specific criteria. The POA random deer slaughter (call it what it is) is not removing a specific trait but rather, the random removal of what some see as pest who eat their plants etc. Instead of a deer kill, the POA calls it “culling” and donate the meat and all is good. Big Canoe should be known for its nature, beauty and wildlife and how we assimilate into nature, not how we control/kill nature. Funny thing, nature usually takes care of itself and it goes afoul when man interferes. Past actions of humans interfering in nature have led disastrous result and imbalance of nature. The removal of Coyotes and wolf in national parks led to more problems and now the reintroduction of the animals we once killed off.
There are other ways to control over population of deer used in other communities such as immunocontraception, using the animal’s own immune system to prevent it from fertilizing offspring. In this practice, deer would be tranquilized, tagged and injected with the vaccine once every two years. Over time, the population is controlled in a more humane way. If we, a “masters of our domain” feel compelled to control nature, should we at least not seek a less cruel way to do so?
