Texas, Textbooks Should Tell the Truth

One Texas textbook describes African slaves as "workers," rather than "slaves." Obviously, textbooks like this need review and revision. The Texas School Board recently heard a proposal to have their school texts reviewed by a team of academics. However, it seems the school system doesn't want a team of academic professionals to fact check their textbooks. The Texas Board of Education voted 8-7 to keep the review system in place that they have already.

Without review by qualified professionals with specialized knowledge, Texas textbooks are likey to keep offering tidbits of wisdom comparable to calling slaves "workers." Please join with me in asking the Texas Board of Education to authorize review of all their school texts by a team of academics.

To the Texas Board of Education:

We the undersigned are dismayed to learn that you think your current system of textbook review is working. Only recently, it was pointed out by a parent that one of your official textbooks refers to African slaves as "workers." We can only assume that your books are rife with other errors that are just as heinous. A review by academics will ensure that Texas students are not just absorbing a lot of misinformation and historical revisionism. Please authorize a team of academics to review and revise the texts students read in Texas public schools.
