Petition to amend Peterborough By-Law 91-71 9.1

9.1 No person upon roller skates, skateboards or similar devices or riding on sleighs, toboggans, toy carts or express wagons or similar devices shall
go upon any highway.
In a day when the federal government is funding programs to encourage healthier lifestyles and "active transportation" to reduce carbon emissions, we feel sec. 9.1 needs to be amended.   The Peterborough police are handing out $65 tickets to anyone riding skateboards or roller blades on any street within the city.     From what I understand in the traffic act the word 'highway' means street, court, blvd., avenue etc. and even means your own driveway.
We the undersigned believe Peterborough By-Law 1991-71 sec. 9.1 needs to be amended.   In a day when the federal government is funding programs to encourage healthier lifestyles and "active transportation" to reduce carbon emissions clearly this law is outdated.      Although it is obvious self propelled vehicles are better for the environment the Peterborough police are still handing out $65 tickets to anyone riding skateboards or roller blades on any street within the city.  We think this should stop.
