The Gramm Leach Bliley Act prohibits the disclosure of consumer personal and financial information by financial and non-financial institutions. Personal and financial information pertaining to customers and consumers of financial and even non-financial entities are to be treated as confidential.
It may seem routine to provide personal or financial information to a financial institution but personal and financial information is also provided when applying for credit or insurance and the verification address. Information like consumer source of income and social security numbers are prohibited from being shared between agencies or disclosed to the public by the Gramm Leach Bliley Act.
