End Animal Experimentation at Princeton University!

On June 1 2011, the USDA issued an Official Warning against Princeton University for violating the Animal Welfare Act (AWA). Princeton University is one of the worst offenders of the Animal Welfare Act out of all the Ivy League Schools. Detailed federal reports and leaked photographs of surgical experimentation paint a grim picture of what occurs inside the Princeton Labs. Here are some of the violations that the USDA & APHIS inspectors noticed.

Primates were deprived of water for more than 24 hours
- 1 in 3 primates are missing toes or fingers
- Laboratory personnel failed to notify a veterinarian when a primate exhibited clinical signs of pain after surgery
- Pregnant marmoset did not receive veterinary care when in distress to give birth
- Two primates used in painful experimentation without the use of anesthesia or pain killers
- Poor condition of primates' research environment
- Incomplete and inconsistent recordkeeping
- Presence of multiple expired medications

According to a whistleblower employed at the lab, "the most brazen professor is Asif A. Ghazanfar. He constantly refuses to cooperate with animal care staff, refuses to do things in compliance with regulations and cooperate with required inspections.

Please ask Christopher Eisgruber to do what's decent and humane: to definitively END experimentation on animals at Princeton University!

Subject: Ban Animal Experimentation at Princeton University

Dear Mr. Christopher Eisgruber,

I urge you to end animal experimentation at Princeton University immediately. Obtained federal reports from the USDA & APHIS reveal that Princeton University is in violation of the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) for inadequate veterinary care and sadistic experimentation. Starting in 2010, APHIS inspectors noticed primates systematically forced to cope without water for twenty-four hours or more. In addition, Princeton laboratory personnel failed to notfiy a veterinarian when a primate showed clinical signs of pain in 2010. In 2011, Princeton laboratory personnel again failed to notfiy a veterinarian when a pregnant marmoset exhibited signs of distress that she was about to give birth. An Animal Use Report discloses that two primates under went experimentation without anesthesia or pain killersin 2011. The list continues on and yet, there is no need for such atrocities.

“The most brazen professor is Asif A. Ghazanfar. He constantly refuses to cooperate with animal care staff, and refuses to comply with required inspections and regulations,” states a whistleblower employed at the lab.

Experimentation lacks scientific value and has not progressed mankind's knowledge of biology, chemistry, medicine, etc. Instead, Princeton University can adopt non-animal methods of experimentation. Statistics have shown that non-animal methods of experimentation cost a fraction of what animal experimentation costs to replace, takes less time to complete and minimizes the difficulty of extrapolation. Princeton University can save tens of thousands of dollars each year by implementing reusable replacements for animal “specimens.” In addition, studies have shown that non-animal teaching tools like computer simulations, multimedia CD-ROMs and models increase students' knowledge of biology significantly more than those students who conduct experiments on animals.

I ask that you do all in your power to expedite the end of animal experimentation at Princeton University.

Sincerely,
