Acorn Woodpecker by Brian Murphy

Stop The Acorn Woodpecker killing at Rossmoor

Target:
Bill Friesen and HOA members
Sponsored by:

The Acorn Woodpeckers in the Northern CA. retirement community of Rossmoor have been a problem for years.  The birds are drilling  holes to store their acorns in the homes that are backed up to Oak Woodland. Unable to solve the problem they have been issued a depredation license to kill 50 birds. This will only increase the problem with these highly social bird groups. We want to develop a sustainable solution for both the birds and the homeowners.
PLEASE HELP US STOP THE KILLING

Dear Mr. Friesen and HOA members, We the undersigned do not believe that the killing of Acorn Woodpeckers will solve the problem. The experts with over 30 years of experience in studying Acorn Woodpeckers state this will only increase the problem. We would like to see the problem resolved more humanely with replacement of the faulty building materials and alternative granaries installed.Thank you for your attention and regard for this petition.Sincerely,Diana Granados, Chair Mt. Diablo Audubon Society's Acorn Woodpecker Task Committee

It is important to ask WHY something is happening and then find a natural solution.

I recently moved to WA state from the east bay. I am shocked that something like this would be allowed. Check with Lindsay Wildlife museum - I'm sure they can come up with an equitable solution. Humans have to realize that "If you don't want it, kill it" solution is barbaric and outdated. I expected more from the bay area. This sounds like something that would happen in Texas or Oklahoma. Do these people really want that association? Disgusting.

I will personally mention Rossmoor's attitude and actions to everyone I know seeking a place to live. I have already taken one prospect from them. Linda Chene

Please find a sustainable solution to the woodpecker problem. Killing fifty of these social birds will not solve the issue and will create problems for the flock.

I volunteer at a wildlife rescue and rehab center in Morro Bay, CA. I am appauled that birds are being targeted like this. I work to save birds and here is Rossmoor indiscriminately killing them. There must be a better way to protect your houses than to destroy wildlife. You are, after all, in THEIR habitat!

Living with wildlife is not always easy - but there are answers to the problem. Listen to the experts. Killing wildlife is never the solution - and who was there first, anyway?

Other solutions should be sought out in place of killing these beautiful birds.

I would welcome woodpeckers in my yard. In the 30 years I have lived here, I have seen one and it was only here for a day.

Killing birds is a ridiculous way of solving a problem. Didn't anyone stop and think that these birds were here first? Get your collective heads together and come up with a better solution. John Briggs http://www.birdingmaine.com

I JUST HEARD ABOUT THE SHOOTING OF ACORN WOODPECKERS AT ROSSMOOR IN WALNUT CREEK ON BBC RADIO. I ACTUALLY COULD NOT BELIEVE MY EARS. THESE BIRDS ARE NATURALLY ENGAGING IN A RARE SURVIVAL BEHAVIOR THAT IS UNIQUE AND THEY SHOULD BE RESPECTED AND ADMIRED FOR IT. IF WE HUMANS HAD TAKEN A CUE AND WERE SAVERS LIKE THESE WOODPECKERS WE MIGHT NOT BE IN THE ECONOMIC MESS WE ARE IN NOW. A SIMPLE, BUT A MOST PROFOUND LESSON FROM NATURE AND WHAT DO WE DO? SHOOT AT IT - DESTROY IT- IT'S BOTHERING US! USING GUNS AND VIOLENCE IS BOTHERING ME BECAUSE I DO NOT BELIEVE IT IS THE ANSWER TO ANYTHING. IN NEARBY PACIFIC GROVE, WHEN THE RACOONS WERE BECOMING IRRITATING, WE FINALLY FOUND USING MOUNTAIN LION URINE AROUND PROPERTY BOUNDARIES KEPT RACOONS AWAY, BUT IT TOOK A WHILE. THERE ARE LOGICAL SCIENTIFIC SOLUTIONS BASED ON TRIGGERING AN ANIMALS NATURAL INSTINCTS TO BEHAVE DIFFERENTLY. PLEASE TRY HARDER. I HAVE WORKED AT ANIMAL SANCTUARIES AND RESCUES AND KNOW IF YOU CONSULT SOME OF THE BEST AND LARGEST, THEY WILL COME UP WITH SOLID SUGGESTIONS. WE LOVE THESE BIRDS. THE HODGES FAMILY.

There are nonlethal remedies to Rossmoor's problem that they have not made a good-faith effort to try. Killing the woodpeckers is not only cruel and unfair but an exercise in futility. PLEASE STOP THE MASS KILLING OF THE BEAUTIFUL ACORN WOOD PECKERS.

The woodpeckers were here first. People moved into their territory. Another solution must be found. We must find a way to live with wildlife.

As a birder. I would love to have Acorn woodpeckers nearby. We have redbellies here and they occasionally drill on my house. There are plenty of ways to humanely deter them if they become annoying.Killing them is just wrong.

Please listen to the voice of reason and find a better solution to this problem. Killing these woodpeckers would be wrong. Amy Wilson

It's always humans that come first isn't it? What a disgusting 'solution'. If I were elderly living in this home I'd welcome the opportunity to see these beautiful birds...shameful...
