Lawrence Hayes, a human rights activist based in NYC, was invited by Binghamton Political Initiative to deliver a lecture on Thursday, April 23rd about his opposition to death penalty and the U.S. (in)justice system. Just days before this event, his parole officer imposed harsh and unwarranted restrictions on his freedom to travel. Their authoritarian tactics toward Mr. Hayes are reflective of a larger parole system which places greater emphasis on heavy-handed policing and surveillance over vital re-entry programs, leading to higher rates of police abuse and re-incarceration. The undersigned demand full civil rights for Lawrence Hayes, including but not limited to his freedom of speech and travel, and a major reform of the parole system in general.

I’m sickened and disgusted! I’m revolted, repulsed, repelled, offended & appalled! What a sick and twisted way of running the justice system over there... STOP RESTRICTING OUR FREEDOMS... Its time to abolish the racist death penalty and to put an end to this whole injustice system WITH THE BULLY-CORRUPTION POLICE. I’m sickened and disgusted! I’m revolted, repulsed, repelled, offended & appalled!

We tried to bring Lawrence Hayes down to Wesleyan University to speak on April 21 and he was, of course, not able to come. Lawrence Hayes and his speaking aren't the problem, it's your attitude and systems that are.

It's not just a system. Real people make these decisions and carry out their consequences. Pitiful and despicable.

The parole system of this Country, is not a part of a correcting system but is part of a controling system. We must change the system in this Country so that it will help people to learn to be a productive part of society.

I have heard Mr. Hayes speak on many occasions regarding issues of justice and social change. He is a very effective and respected member of the community, and shows considerable insight on constructive v. destructive modes of functioning. The more Mr. Hayes speaks to our youth, the great the debt this country owes him!
