At the 2015 Promenade weekend in Barrie Ontario citizens were shocked by the inhumane conditions witnessed at the Petting Zoo. Photos circulated on social media from the event resulting in a series of complaints to the SPCA and organized protests at the event.
It is time for Barrie Ontario to fully stand for animal rights and not animal exploitation. If this exhibition is to serve as an educational experience, surely the health, wellness, and proper care of these animals would be a great takeaway for children and families. However, the petting zoo failed to implement proper animal care and exemplify a sensitivity to the animal's basic needs.
- The animals were contained on the pavement with very little bedding. Ex. The calf pictured above is laying on an inadequate amount of bedding which was soiled by its own excrement.
- No shade or a means to cool down was provided. The goats were seen lying on their side panting and motionless and the ducks had no access to water to swim in.
- Dirty water was given to the animals
- Candy Apples were being fed to the calf as food by the caretakers
We are a generation that will NOT tolerate animal exploitation for 'entertainment' purposes and we will NOT support businesses or events that continue to do so. The petting zoo exhibit at the Barrie Promenade should be removed and the welfare of these animals should be fully investigated by the OSPCA.

With this years promenade event scheduled for July 1-3 all of your 16000 signatures have been sent (again) to the mayor Jeff Lehman, the Barrie Business Assocation, and the OSPCA. I have asked them what will be different this year?
