U.S. Congress: Ban Electric Shock Stun Belts During Trials

  • by: Kristi Arnold
  • recipient: President Pro Tempore of the Senate Patrick Leahy and Speaker of the House John A. Boehner

The California Supreme Court just upheld the use of electric shock stun belts, even though they've been banned in LA County. And the court found they could affect the results of trials previously.

These belts keep defendants in a state of constant fear throughout the trial, and are used to torture and humiliate them in front of the entire court. These belts are used throughout country, thus Congress should enact a ban.

The belts administer about 50,000 volts and leave the defendants physically incapacitated for about 30-40 minutes. Victims often fall to the ground and lose control of their bodily functions.

Law enforcement officers have been shocked as part of training, and describe it as if "you had nine-inch nails and you tried to rip my sides out and then you put a heat lamp on me" and "it felt like every muscle in my body short-circuited at the same time."

“As the number of inmates in U.S. prisons and jails continues to spiral, the threat of severe electro-shock to control their behavior is becoming commonplace,” Amnesty International said, “The stun belt is also increasingly bringing cruelty into courtrooms across the country.”

Tell Congress to ban this humiliating torture device in the United States!

Dear Sirs,

We the undersigned ask that you ban the use of electroshock belts.
