Governor Fallin: Stay Richard Glossip's Execution NOW

  • by: Susan V
  • recipient: Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin and key staff

Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin swore to “support, obey, and defend the Constitution of the United States,” which protects a person’s right to due process before being deprived of his liberty and life. But even though death row inmate Richard Glossip has been deprived of his fundamental human rights, Governor Fallin has refused to stay his execution scheduled for September 30th.

According to numerous credible reports on Glossip’s case, including a recent one by Mother Jones, there is absolutely no physical evidence linking Glossip to the murder of his employer. However, there is plenty implicating a former drug user named Justin Sneed.

Nevertheless, add the reports, police offered Sneed a deal - if he agreed to claim Glossip hired him to commit the murder.

Because Glossip’s court-appointed counsel failed him by omitting important evidence and recently more exculpatory evidence has emerged, there is no excuse for Fallin to refuse a stay at least until all evidence can be properly investigated. Doing otherwise would not be upholding her sworn oath of office.

Nevertheless Governor Fallin seems more interested in supporting a presumption of guilt than one of innocence. Mother Jones notes that last year Fallin even threatened to execute a pair of condemned men in defiance of her own state Supreme Court, which had issued a stay in their cases.”

Sign this petition to demand that Governor Fallin stay Glossip’s execution.

Governor Fallin:

As governor and key members of her staff, you have a duty and responsibility to protect fundamental human rights guaranteed under the US Constitution and therefore a duty to stay Richard Glossip’s execution.

According to Oklahoma law, the Governor has the power to grant, after conviction, reprieves, or stays of executions "not to exceed sixty days without the consent of the Board," according to Wikipedia and Mother Jones.

In addition to the Governor’s sworn oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States, Presumption of innocence is “regarded as an international human right under the UN's Universal Declaration of Human Rights, article 11."

And while many others on death row, some after their executions, have been exonerated by DNA evidence, all the DNA evidence in Mr. Glossip’s case points to Justin Sneed’s guilt and already exonerates Mr. Glossip.

Maybe most concerning about this case is evidence that police coached Sneed into implicating Mr. Glossip, Reportedly, the video interview supporting this evidence was never heard in any trial.

Even though a former juror told a local Fox News station that he/she “would have voted differently if some of the information that has recently come to light had been presented to the jury,” Governor Fallin has so far refused to uphold the Constitution and protect Mr. Glossip’s fundamental rights to a fair trial and presumption of innocence.

According to the Fox report, the juror they interviewed, along with many other reasonable people, are calling for a stay of Mr. Glossip's execution.

Please stay this execution immediately!

Sincerely,

[Your name]
Update #18 years ago
The petition and a note reminding Gov. Fallin of her oath to uphold the Constitution was sent via email earlier today. According to NBC News, minutes after the scheduled time for Glossip's execution, Fallin issued a stay until Nov. 6 because of "Last minute questions about...chemicals used for lethal injection." This is good news and bad news. Fallin should be ensuring that Glossip's right to a fair trial is protected. Please keep the pressure on to insist Fallin honor her oath of office.
