Spain: Approve a legal framework for animal sanctuaries

Every year millions of animals like pigs, calves, chickens or lambs are bred on farms in deplorable conditions with the sole purpose of being slaughtered to serve as food for human consumption. However, there are a handful of refuges in which a few of these animals can live without fear of being slaughtered.

Animal sanctuaries are increasingly present in Spain, managed by activists and volunteers full of enthusiasm and motivation to help our animal friends. The animals they serve are healed, fed and have a quality of life worth living.

However, the Spanish Government doesn't legally recognize the existence of these shelters, and equates their regulation to farms producing livestock for human consumption. This leads to situations where the administration has forced the slaughter sick animals because "they could be a risk for human consumption."

I ask Spanish Government to approve a regulatory framework that recognizes the existence and value of these sanctuaries for animals, placing them at a similar level than animal shelters for pets like dogs and cats. Sign this petition and help me get this legal recognition for animal sanctuaries.

Please, approve a regulatory framework that recognizes the existence and value of the animal sanctuaries, placing them at a similar level than animal shelters for pets like dogs and cats.
