Support the Santa Cruz Chemical Trespass Ordinance

Target:
Santa Cruz City Council
WE THE PEOPLE OF SANTA CRUZ%uFFFDARE COMING TOGETHER IN OUR COMMUNITY TO TAKE BACK LOCAL CONTROL OF PESTICIDE USE!
In the fall of 2007, the State of California, under Federal mandate, aerial sprayed pesticides over the Monterey Bay Area in an attempt to eradicate the Light Brown Apple Moth (LBAM). As a result, 643 people reported illnesses, thousands of seabirds died, countless household pets were sickened, and bees disappeared. With the guidance of Global Exchange and the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund (CELDF), we have written an ordinance that will keep the City of Santa Cruz safe from future pesticide assaults forever:
Help support THE CITY OF SANTA CRUZ LOCAL CONTROL, PESTICIDE and CHEMICAL TRESPASS ORDINANCE, which bans corporations from engaging in the bulk application of pesticides, establishes strict liability and burden of proof%uFFFD standards for chemical trespass, asserts the right of the community to make decisions regarding the use of pesticides, and recognizes the rights of natural communities and ecosystems not to be poisoned.

Our health is our wealth. Let's pay the farmers instead of the doctors and learn to accept that biodiversity includes a few bugs in the system.

Who else has the right to decide whether or not the community of Santa Cruz gets sprayed with pesticides other than the people who live there? No one!

There are safe alternatives that will not put the people of Santa Cruz at a health risk. Use them or these people will mobilize. This is an important issue to these people, Life or death. You must recognize this and support the Ordinance.

It would be great not to have to close windows in our homes and cars when others are applying chemicals. It would be great not to have to keep our pets and children off public land because of what might have been sprayed. It would be really great to be able to take a deep breath and not worry about what's in our air!!

Myself as a 15 year Fire Manager for wildland related services are constanly seeing this in many states we visit throughout the years. I constantly attempt to educate my Crews, Public and Homeowners on this issue. I have found skilled ways to alert them through various techniques and fliers. Most don't want to leave there safety bubble but bringing some info on there computer and walking away....Email me for more info/topics Staff@Defensibleperimeters.com

I wnat to take back control of our environment and our health--eliminating chemicals as much as possible in the form of pesticides, products that we consume or use such as shampoos, soaps, etc. There is an epidemic today of auto-immune diseases caused by chemicals and we need to become aware first, and then work to eliminate these chemicals in our lives.

Children are at greater risk of sensitivities to pesticide use. Please keep them safe and healthy.

It's unconstitutional to do mandated mass pesticide and chemical sprays in areas against the consent of the mass public. The public has a right to know what is being sprayed into their air, water and food, and when they vote NO it should be respected, and not just ignored as in the case of the attempt to eradicate the Light Brown Apple Moth.

This is important to everyone and everything. Covering the world with poisonous chemicals will only disrupt the ecosystem that we rely on to survive.

Dear Council Members, You must know how important this issue is. Santa Cruz is one of the greatest places on earth, the most progressive, the most conscious. More and more our basic human rights are being taken away for political interests, for greed. Please help us stop this spraying. Open your hearts and see the insanity of what is happening. Thank you. Sincerely, Michael Harrington

In the 80's the state wanted to spay us for gypsy moth using the "POLICE POWERS OF THE STATE". People for a Safe Felton dicovered that the state entomologist had a research grant to study developing Carbaryl resistant beneficial insects.(Carbaryl kills all the bugs not just bad ones) How handy for her project to have mass spraying of Carbaryl!(FOLLOW THE MONEY!) We stopped them then, we can stop them now. The state att. gen told us if we didn't like it our only option was the courts. So we sued, and the City, County,Sierra Club etc. JOINED our grass roots effort and WE WON. They did spray bt but it seemed so much less toxic than Carbaryl that we didn't try to stop it. We have to take back our POWER. NO FORCED DOSING WITH ANYTHING ANYTIME! Namaste

The testing of these chemicals has not significantly proven unharmful to humans, and is not worth the cost. Many were sick and developed lung conditions last year. We do not need it, it is a scam by those lobbying for it. we ahve always had the moths, and you spraying areas where people live, not agricultural, BUT PEOPLE. WE HAVE CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS AND MY FAMILY WILL BE INVOLVED IN MAJOR LAWSUITS if this is not stopped.

I don't believe the gypsy moth is a great danger. I am appalled at the chemical trespassing that is occurring in Ojai. There are many chemically sensitive individuals in the Santa Cruz area whose health can be seriously impacted by this type of spraying, particularly if they are not even given enough warning to protect themselves. Ongoing spraying leaves no option of temporarily leaving the area either.
