Tell the New York Times: Stop ignoring terror attacks outside the Western world

Over the last week, terrorist attacks in Brussels, Lahore and Baghdad claimed more than a hundred innocent lives. But the New York Times only covered the Brussels attack in depth, and gave little or no coverage to the attacks claiming lives in non-Western countries.

Add your name to this petition to urge the New York Times to drop its Western-centric reporting and give equal coverage to terror attacks, regardless of where they happen.

In the last week, 31 people in Brussels, 31 people in Baghdad and 69 people in Lahore were killed in mass terrorist attacks. But New York Times coverage of each attack did not correspond to the number of lives lost. On Facebook, the publication posted about Brussels over 75 times, Lahore just 4 times and not once about Baghdad.

When the New York Times fails to cover attacks outside of the Western world, it hides facts about how terrorism is affecting people around the world. It leads Americans to false assumptions that terrorists are only targeting white Christians, when people of all races and religions are being killed. And, worst of all, it implies that the lives of innocent people in Europe are more precious than those of the mothers and children who died in Lahore or Baghdad.

How can we be expected to understand how terrorism impacts people around the world if journalists fail to tell us about the true scope of the problem? As one of the country's most reputable news sources with international appeal, New York Times has a responsibility to cover terrorist attacks without bias towards the race or religion of the victims.

Add your name now to demand balanced coverage of terror attacks. If enough of us sign this petition, the New York Times will realize its readers want to get all the facts, not just news about Europeans and Americans.

Dear New York Times Editorial Board,

I am appalled that your coverage of recent terror attacks claiming the lives of hundreds of people has largely ignored attacks outside of Western countries.

In the last week, 31 people in Brussels, 31 people in Baghdad and 69 people in Lahore were killed in mass terrorist attacks. But New York Times coverage of each attack did not correspond to the number of lives lost.

This is incredibly irresponsible, especially given the fact that so many Americans in this country react to terror attacks with racist actions towards Muslims, even though Muslims are equally (if not more) likely to be killed by a terrorist attack compared to Christians.

As one of the country's most reputable news sources with international appeal, New York Times has a responsibility to cover terrorist attacks without bias towards the race or religion of the victims. I urge you to do so immediately.
