Request Local Government Create a Commission on Homelessness

In our small town communities we discovered there are over 300 homeless children! There is no place for them to turn and there are no real resources in place to examine the problem and work toward positive solutions that prevent and end homelessness.

We need our local government agencies to recognize the problem and this petition will hopefully provide the initiative needed for the BMA to recognize and establish A Commission on the Homeless.

Most communities already have something like this in place, but as a small town it has taken us a little longer to see the effects of lost jobs, homes, and a general sense of hopelessness in our area. But it is here - and it's not going to just disappear without the helping hands of many!

It is evident that Kingsport must work cooperatively through a community plan that sets strategies focused on achieving common goals to address homelessness, and that doing this will serve our city well.

Making such a coordinated effort will achieve far better results than slowly reverting back to the uncoordinated, inconsistent and unfocused alternative.

If we as a community agree that homelessness is not acceptable, then we are called to take action and to be accountable to one another as we work together to improve on our present circumstances, where there are still families and individuals living on our streets and in temporary shelters, living in untenable situations with no achieve plan to find and obtain a permanent and sustainable place to live.

As we aspire to prevent reduce and end homelessness, the city of Kingsport needs to take a leadership role by creating a Commission on Homelessness
