Protect Funding for NASA’s Earth Sciences Research!

President-elect Donald Trump has promised to cut NASA’s funding for Earth Sciences research, claiming the agency should be focused on space exploration and not “political” topics like climate change. Unfortunately, the Republican-led Congress is likely to agree with him, since they’ve tried to strip NASA’s funding several times as well over the past two years.

This is exactly the wrong approach for the new administration to take. Protecting our climate should be a bipartisan issue -- the health of our planet affects all of us equally. Earth’s rich biodiversity and wild spaces are worth preserving. Future generations deserve to live in a world without the extreme weather, drought, poverty, and political instability that climate change will cause.

And the truth is, NASA’s funding is about so much more than global warming. The agency’s work also helps us better understand natural disasters, helping us prepare for and respond to floods, earthquakes, droughts, and dangerous storms. Without access to the agency’s satellites, researchers fear this work could be sent “back to the dark ages.”

Better understanding our climate is also an important national security issue: a group of 43 nonpartisan military, national security, homeland security, and intelligence experts have urged Trump to take climate change’s potential impact on our military and foreign policy seriously.

There are so many reasons we need to continue to support this important research. Please sign and share this petition to let Congress know we won’t let them strip NASA’s climate funding without a fight!
