Premier Wynne: Stand Strong in Your Opposition to the Energy East Pipeline

Premier Wynne has done a 180 in her position on the Energy East pipeline. While Ontario used to have a direct opposition to this destructive project, Wynne has recently changed her tune. This comes on the heels of an announcement from Montreal and Quebec mayors who strongly oppose the project. Premier Notley, of Alberta, seeing the intensity of opposition in Quebec set her sights on Ontario and, after meeting, Premier Wynne changed her stance on the issue.

This is a time for Premier Wynne to show strong leadership. We know that it's just a matter of time before pipelines leak and many communities and First Nations in Northern Ontario are opposed to the project. More pipelines just strengthen Canada's dependence on oil economy and does nothing to help us achieve the promises made at COP21.

By signing today you are helping to support strong environmental and climate policy in Ontario and helping to protect pristine wilderness.

More Information:

The Energy East pipeline is a 40 year old pipeline currently running from Alberta through to Ontario carrying natural gas. The new proposal is to expand the pipeline into Quebec and through New Brunswick and to convert the pipeline to carry diluted bitumen (dilbit) from the Alberta tarsands.

The pipeline would be similar to the age and type as the one that ruptured in Kalamazoo Michigan causing environmental and public health disasters there. There is no known effective way to clean up dilbit once it is released into the environment. Pipelines are constantly rupturing, so we know that it is not a matter of if, but when, there will be a spill.

The proposed line runs through pristine Northern Ontario wilderness and threatens the water sources of these communities. We need Ontario to stand in opposition with the mayors of Quebec.

Sign today to demand strong leadership from Kathleen Wynne for the protection of our environment, water and public health.

We call upon you to stand strongly in opposition to the Energy East pipeline proposal. We understand that the current pipeline is not fit for transporting diluted bitumen, nor is there anough information to properly assess environmental risk management, making this a dangerous project.

We understand that, in the case of a spill, Northern Ontario communities are at risk of having their water polluted irreparably creating a public health crisis. We also have grave concern for Northern Ontario's pristine wilderness and the effects on local flora and fauna in case of a spill.

We know that the Liberal government has opposed the pipeline in the past and we call on you to stand strong in your opposition despite the pressure from the federal and Albertan governments. We also know it is time for our country to move away from oil production for economic stability. We know that expanding pipelines will keep us further from our COP21 commitments.
