Urge the State Government to Create a Marine Park in Sydney Harbour to Protect Wildlife

Sydney Harbor is rich in biodiversity, however, many of the fish are not able to grow and reach maturity because of pressure from fishing in the Harbour, according to a report in the Daily Telegraph.

That is why conservationists are calling for the New South Wales government to create a marine reserve in Sydney Harbour.

Areas in and around Sydney Harbour, including Manly and North Head, have been named as the biggest biodiversity hot spots in Sydney.

In a recent survey conducted by Reef Life it was revealed that there had been an increase in tropical fish numbers in the area, with volunteers and divers recording 200 fish species at sites including Shelly Beach, Fairy Bower and North Head.

That is a significant increase from the previous record of 170 species found in 2009. The biggest rise was in tropical fish numbers.

Survey co-ordinator, John Turnbull, said in the report: “We recorded a significant number of colourful tropical species, including green turtles, unicornfish, and moorish idols, that are being driven down into Sydney by ocean warming from climate change.”

A marine park would also help protect a nearby colony of threatened fairy penguins by restricting activities in the area.

The wildlife of Sydney Harbour deserves to be protected so that they can live their full lifespan. Will you join me in urging the government to enact legislation to create a marine park in Sydney Harbour?
