Austria: Animal welfare into the constitution!

  • by: Anna Geisler
  • recipient: Vice Chancellor Michael Spindellegger; Animal Welfare Spokesmen: OEVP (conservative party) Franz Essl, SPOE (social party) Dietmar Keck

Last year Austrian Animal Rights Activists reached a big part of the public with a huge number of demonstrations and protests for getting animal welfare into the constitution. But since now almost 17 years this attempt and the plans of all the other parties failed because the conservative party wants to keep the profitable connections to the animal exploitation lobbyists.
A subcommittee for this important matter was finally after an awfully long waiting and demonstration time pulled together, but again the conservatives ignore the session appointments and the whole topic with silly excuses.

After 17 years it's enough with this delay and detain policy.
They have already received thousands of protest letters and e-Mails. A petition with ten-thousands signatures was handed to them, but still the Austrian Conservative Party is blocking every attempt and taking two steps back for every step forward and ignoring that the majority of Austrians want to see animal welfare in the constitution.

The legislative elections will be in September, before that we want to collect some more voices for animals, so that they too are protected in the constitution - not primarily as ressource, as the conservatices suggested, but as beings.
