Humber bridge suicide safety measures

We are starting this petition to present to the Humber bridge board in hope to make the Humber bridge more secure. For years the Humber bridge has been a suicide hot spot and the result of many lives lost. After the recent heartbreaking news of a local 14 year old boy losing his life we feel it's time to put our foot down and demand for the bridge to made more secure. The bridge currently holds a spot in the most popular and notorious suicide spots on earth!!

Over 200 people have fallen from the Humber bridge and only 5 have survived. we understand that the bridge cannot be held responsible for people wanting to take their lives, but unfortunately it plays a part n the results. If action was taking to prevent suicide on the bridge, more lives would be saved. Kingston upon Hulls landmark would not hold such a sad association.

What we want -

* suicide barrier

* higher fencing

* suicide hotline free phone.

Some facts -

* It was discussed in 2007, and it worked in scarborough. They managed to get higher fencing on the valley bridge.

* In 2010, the Humber bridge board announced it would replace the low level fence, but Chairman of the Humber Bridge Board Councillor Stephen Parnaby said that they had not allocated the funding needed.

*The current rail is around 45 inches high, posing a potential danger to pedestrians and cyclists

*Toll income for 2013-14 totaled £14.156M which was £0.125M less than the probable budget of £14.281M. However, after taking into account the actual number of pre-paid tickets used and other year-end adjustments, the total income for the year was expected to be closer to £14.5M

*The safety barrier scheme would have cost around £4.5m.
