Tell Southern California to Stop Penalizing Pet Owners!

Landlords are increasingly raising rents and security deposits for pet owners. The problem is especially prevalent in the Los Angeles area, and discourages people from giving homeless animals a loving home.

The fees are ridiculous. A rental unit in Encino requires a $5000 pet deposit, plus an additional $25 per month "pet rent" fee. These fees are meant to cover possible property damage caused by pet waste, clawing and biting. But all of these problems are due to training failures and neglect. Owners who properly care for their pets generally don't experience these problems, yet all owners are being penalized. Unfortunately, they may never see their money again, even if they return their units in good condition.

Prohibitive pet rents punish innocent animals who need loving homes. Instead, landlords need to consider pet owners on a case-by-case basis and penalize property damage without penalizing responsible pet ownership. Please sign the petition to urge Los Angeles County Officials to prohibit landlords from penalizing responsible pet owners!
