Macaws are colorful New World parrots, native to Mexico, Central America, South America and formerly the Carribean. The majority of macaws are now endangered in the wild. There are 18 species of Macaws, including extinct and critically endangered species.
One of the greatest problems threatening macaw populations is the illegal trapping for the bird trade. Yet despite the endanged status, legal permits are still granted to export the macaw, which fuels the illegal trapping. Another problem macaws face is deforestation.
We ask that a ban be placed on issuing permits to export all macaw subspecies, and more attention placed on preserving their natural habitat.
