Put Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill!

  • by: Chris Wolverton
  • recipient: Secretary of the Treasury Jacob Lew; President Barack Obama

All paper currency in United States circulation currently features white men. With the 100th anniversary of woman's suffrage approaching in 1920, it is time for our currency to reflect women's positive impact on our history. In a recent poll of 600,000 voters by the Women on the 20s campaign, abolitionist Harriet Tubman emerged as the choice to replace Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill.

Andrew Jackson's face on the $20 bill is out of date. His Indian Removal Act and Trail of Tears forced tens of thousands of Native Americans to abandon their homes and march a thousand miles. Many froze to death or died of starvation along the way. These racist, cruel, and even genocidal actions should be vilified, not celebrated in our currency.

Other countries, like Sweden and Australia, feature women's faces. Harriet Tubman's role in bringing slaves to freedom through the Underground Railroad makes her far more worthy of a spot on the $20 bill than Jackson. A female face and an African American face on our currency is long overdue, and would be an inspiration. Please sign the petition to urge the Treasury to replace Andrew Jackson with Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill!

This idea originated with the non-profit Women On 20s and its founder, Barbara Ortiz Howard, who presented their petition to President Obama. We support their wonderful idea, and want to keep pushing the ultimate decision maker, the Secretary of the Treasury, to do the right thing for ALL Americans!

I write in hopes of changing the face on the $20 bill to reflect current American values and our country's diversity.
