STOP the Koch brothers weakening the law for criminal CEOS

  • by: Jessica B
  • recipient: US House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-VA)

The billionaire Koch brothers are pushing the US House Judiciary Committee to include in its criminal justice reform package measures that will decriminalize numerous white-collar crimes, making it easier for corporate CEOs to abuse their power without consequence.

If these acts are decriminalized, it will make it extremely difficult for the federal government to charge guilty corporate CEOs with many abuses such as financial fraud and environmental pollution. According to Department of Justice spokesman Peter Carr, the legislation would “significantly weaken countless federal statutes”, including, “those that play an important role in protecting the public welfare.”

Until now, Congress has been focused on reducing sentences for nonviolent drug offences and shrinking the private prison industry. But while a bipartisan congressional group works hard to fix our broken criminal justice system, the Koch brothers are simply using them to advance their own self-interested and extreme agenda. We cannot let them get away with it. We cannot let reduced accountability for criminal CEOs be the price we pay for fixing our broken criminal justice system.

Dear Chairman Goodlatte,

Please reject the recent attempt by the Koch brothers to have the US House Juduciary Committee include in its criminal justice reform package any measure that will decriminalize or weaken the legal standard for white-collar crimes.

We cannot let reduced accountability for criminal CEOs be the price we pay for fixing our broken criminal justice system.

Sincerely,
