President Obama: Condemn Human Rights Violations in Post-Coup Turkey

  • by: Ann W
  • recipient: President Barack Obama

After the recent failed military coup in Turkey, thousands upon thousands of people were taken prisoner. Since that time, leaders from around the world have warned President Erdogan not to use the failed coup as “carte blanche to do whatever he wants,"

Tragically, Amnesty International has received reports of horrific abuse that includes everything from severe beatings, starvation, rape with no medical attention for injuries.

Despite the pleas from Amnesty International to allow its representatives in to assess and attend to the suffering prisoners, Erodgan is resisting and making statements that he will  “clean the virus.” There is also talk that he wants to reinstate the death penalty that has been inactive since 2004.

These prisoners are crammed into every possible structure and piled on top of one another with their hands tied behind their backs. Some have been beaten so savagely and forced to die slows deaths from lack of medical care.

President Obama has been alerted to the situation. Please sign this petition imploring him to condemn these atrocities with all of his power!

Dear President Obama,

We (the undersigned) are sickened to hear of the inhumane torture, rape and starvation taking place with the people who were taken prisoner in Turkey after the failed military coup.

As you may know, Amnesty International is working to gain access to the prisoners and render aid.

We are also disturbed to hear that Turkey is threatening to reinstate the death penalty. If this happens, will the world bear witness to mass killings of these already suffering prisoners?

Please use your role as President of the United States to strongly condemn these human atrocities.

Sincerely,
