Harden the US power grid before its too late!!!!!

Despite being the top tech country in the world, the US has a soft power grid. At any moment an emp or even a solar flair could send us back to the dark ages. The US spends over 500 billion on defense, that's more than the next eight countries combined, so why is our power grid our biggest weak spot? Our security is at risk here, all your technology wouldn't work if the power grid went down or was attacked. This is a big possibility with the WMD's of today.
