Cops Grabbed Teen By the Throat! Tell the Texas Education Agency to Conduct Independent Investigation

A minor fight in the school lunchroom of Round Rock High School in Texas was stopped by the Assistant Principal. However, when school resource officers arrived, the scene quickly escalated into an even higher level of violence that ended with a 130-pound 14-year-old boy being grabbed by the throat and slammed to the ground!

According to the assaulted student Gyasi Hughes, who had never been in a fight at school before, he was trying to calm down but the officers wouldn't let up:

“I was mad because he kept pushing me and touching me and I wasn’t physically doing anything to him either. That’s when I said ‘can you leave me alone’ and that’s when he took me down.”

The video clearly supports the students accounting of events. These officers had no reason to take such violent measures on the boy. His father, Kashka Hughes, is planning to press charges against the officers involved.

The school system states it is investigating the incident but there needs to be an independent review of the incident as well as an overhaul in the hiring practices and training of school resource officers!

Attn: Texas Education Commissioner Michael Williams

We (the undersigned) are appalled that a Round Rock High School student named Gyasi Hughes was grabbed by the throat and slammed to the ground by an obviously over agitated school resource officer. Video clearly shows the officers cornering and poking at the child; all while the student was simply asking to be left alone.

He was no physical threat to anyone. He had never been in trouble at school before and yet he was treated like a violent criminal!

While we are glad to know that the school system and police department is conducting a review of the situation, in a situation like this, more needs to be done. School resource officers need to be screened and trained more thoroughly before they are allowed to work with minors. There also needs to be an independent investigation so the students and parents of Round Rock High School can have some measure of confidence that the results are not biased.

Sincerely,
