USFWS – Ensure Protection of the Thresher Sharks at the CITES Meeting

Several wildlife species like the Thresher sharks may be threatened mostly due to the sport of fishing, making them vulnerable to over-fishing. They are used for their meat on a national level and their fins on an international level. They have declined in numbers by anywhere from 70% to 99% from the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans. The Thresher sharks have an enormous, curving upper lobe of the tail fin that can be as long as their bodies, making them highly recognizable among other sharks.  This unique feature, their tail can also be a deadly weapon with its ability to whip around to herd, daze and slaughter its prey.  This shark is predominantly dark grey with silver to gray accents on their sides, and white bellies. They are also easily recognized by its dorsal fin above the pectoral fins. Thresher sharks are a valuable economic asset in many of the waters it dwells such as the central, western and eastern Pacific Ocean, the northwestern Indian Ocean and the North Atlantic.

The effort in this petition is to urge the U. S. Fish & Wildlife Services to take a strong stand to help promote the listing of the Thresher sharks at the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) meeting in September and ensure that they are given the protection they need to keep them from the brink of extinction.  You can help me with this effort by signing and sharing this petition, adding your own thoughts and ideas for the protection of wildlife like these sharks.

U. S. Fish & Wildlife Services – I am highly grateful and appreciative of your efforts to co-sponsor proposals on the protection of some species of wildlife under Appendix I and II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) that is coming up in September in Johannesburg, South Africa.  Please ensure that the Thresher sharks are listed under Appendix I and II will ensure that international trade is sustainable, legally acquired and traceable. It is crucial that this species is regulated and protected from possible brink of extinction.
