Stop Plans to Cull 100,000 Siberian Reindeer!
Siberian officials are demanding a huge cull of Siberian reindeer to begin in late November and continue until Christmas time. The cull will wipe out 100,000 of the region's 730,000 reindeer.
The government claims that reindeer are overgrazing, and that their numbers present the threat of spreading anthrax. But the real problem is habitat loss due to factors like climate change and gas development. Wiping out reindeer will not only hurt the animals, it will threaten an ancient way of life for nomadic tribes, who raise herds for their sustainable lifestyle. The government is offering apartments to compensate affected tribes, but that is obviously a huge change from the traditional way of life they're used to.
