Stop the Great White Shark culling program

  • by: Tony Higgs
  • recipient: Premier of Western Australia

The Western Australian government is considering a continuation of a shark cull program targeting Great White Sharks. The stated purpose of the program is to protect beachgoers.

A trial program that went for 3 months this summer caught a total of 172 sharks. Fifty tiger sharks larger than three metres were destroyed, with the biggest measuring at 4.5 metres. Tiger sharks have not been implicated in fatal shark attacks. No Great Whites were caught. The results demonstrate that the program is ineffectual and is harming the shark population unnecessarily.

Please help send a message to the WA government that this culling program should be discontinued.

Dear Premier

The trail shark culling program targeting Great White Sharks has proven that the strategy is ineffectual and is in fact harmful to our environment.

The attached petition demonstrates that there is a widely held view that this program should be stopped. Signotories to this petition include people who use the ocean for recreational purposes and know that there are risks in doing so.

Please use the government's resources for a worthwhile purpose that does not harm our wildlife or our environment.

Yours sincerely

Update #19 years ago
The Western Australian Premier has stated that the shark catch and kill program will now not go ahead. Public opposition to the program was no doubt important in arriving at this point. Thank you for your valued contribution to achieving this good outcome.
