Have Governor Murphy grant amnesty to NJ students the day of the December 6 climate strike

    Governor Murphy,

I am a student organizer with the North Jersey Climate Coalition and we are planning a big climate strike on December 6th. The strike is going to take place in Morristown, Montclair, Hackensack, Maplewood, Jersey City, New Brunswick, and Newark.

Hundreds of students will take to the streets to show support for the growing international student movement calling for climate justice. We will be striking in solidarity with hundreds of thousands of people around the world.

We wanted to ask if you, Governor Murphy, would grant students amnesty for, December 6, 2019, the day of the strike?

Granting amnesty to students would give more students the opportunity to participate in the strike. Ultimately, students benefit from attending climate strikes since they gain new knowledge on issues the world and their communities are facing, they are empowered to use their voices to stand up for what they believe, and become civic participants.

New Jersey is in the forefront of education and has given students they need to succeed not only in today's world but in the future. I have the privilege of attending one of New Jersey's innovative technical high schools, Morris County School of Technology, which along with other New Jersey high schools is dedicated to preparing students for the future and making them well rounded citizens. With climate activism on the rise, environmental action is the way of the future. Students who attend the strike would be preparing for their future wherein they have to make decisions on what they want to support and what morals they will develop. I sincerely hope that you will grant amnesty for your students and show them that their voices matters.

    Thank you,

    Samantha Franklin
